SUMMIT, NJ - If only it was as easy as A-B-C.

The local spelling champs hailing from the Hilltop City's fourth and fifth grades were crowned at Summit's Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School as the Summit Junior Fortnightly Club (SJFC), on behalf of the GFWC New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs - Junior Membership Bee Competition Series, held its annual Spelling Bee.

The event was open to all to fourth and fifth grade students in Summit's five public elementary schools and Summit's two private elementary schools.

The 2018 winners are:

First Place - Evelyn Grissinger (Kent Place School, 5th Grade)

Second Place - Chloe Korn (Oak Knoll School, 4th Grade)

3rd Place - Stella Lemkau  (Lincoln Hubbard Elementary School, 4th Grade).

The three advance to the Liberty District Level, with the top three finalists from there moving on to the State Level competition.

This year’s SJFC Spelling Bee was co-chaired by Josiane Fischer and Michelle McKern, with McKern noting, “that with over 42 children participating in this year’s competition it was wonderful to see the community support such a fun and educational event."

Fischer added, “While our members love this signature event it’s nice to see growing involvement from new community supporters like the Wells Fargo Foundation who generously donated a community grant in addition to our annual support from Lois Schneider Realtor who provided our three winners with cash prizes."
