SUMMIT, NJ - The Summit Free Public Library's (SFPL) popular annual Summer Reading Program is about to blast off, with the 2019 edition featuring a theme of 'A Universe of Stories'. Paying homage to the 50th anniversary of NASA's Apollo 11 moon landing, the space-y program will launch on June 8 when the Library hosts a Planetarium Show provided by Pearl Observatory beginning at 2 p.m. in the Rotunda.
The event will feature a 'portable planetarium', with participants experiencing the night sky, learning about the planets and discovering how to find constellations, planets, and more. While outer space may be unlimited, space for the activity is -- unfortunately -- not, so those interested in attending are asked to register as soon as possible to guarantee a spot.
Last summer, more than 700 children and adults participated in the SFPL Summer Reading Program. Every member of the family can participate, with a program for every age and stage beginning at 6 months through adult.
The Summit Free Public Library's mission to promote literacy and a love of reading in the community, is both furthered and enhanced by encouraging children to continue to stretch their imaginations and improve their reading skills throughout the summer months, parents reading to their babies, and adults challenging themselves to set goals to read more and / or perhaps trying a new genre.
Adults, teens, and children who sign up for the Summer Reading Program have the opportunity to earn prizes and raffle tickets for reaching reading goals. Every adult who signs up on June 8 will receive a free Uber Eats delivery service certificate (Uber Eats. That day, there will also be a raffle for a family 4-pack from Field Station Dinosaur. All children who sign up will receive a one-day pool pass to the Summit Family Aquatic Center -- valid for use the last two weeks in August -- compliments of the Summit Department of Community Programs.
Many area businesses have donated prizes, raffle items and gift cards including The Connection, Benihana , Chipotle, Color-me-Mine, Dunkin Donuts, Edible Arrangements, The Papery, The Paper Source, Sweet Nothings, Tito’s Burritos & Wings, Z-Rolls Ice Cream, Zappias Deli & Catering, Medieval Times, Picaboo (picaboo.com), Somerset Patriots and The State Theatre of NJ.
Many of the guest lectures and summer reading program activities are sponsored by the Friends of the Summit Free Public Library including:
June 22: The Space Race: 1957-1975
June 24: A performance by juggler and jokester, Jester Jim
July 1 - 2: 'Magnify', a microscope-related Maker Camp

The Summit Free Public Library Summer Reading Program is open throughout the summer and residents can sign up any time. The earlier the sign up, however, the more books that can be read and the more raffle tickets that will be earned toward prizes.
Children, accompanied by a parent, and teens can sign up at the ‘Ask Us’ Desk in the Library's Children’s Room, while adults cab visit the Information Desk in the Main Room.
