SUMMIT, NJ - The Film Society of Summit will launch a 'Virtual Cinema and Conversation Series' -- beginning April 17 at 5 p.m. -- with a virtual discussion with Rob Garver about his new film, 'What She Said: The Art of Pauline Kael'. Garver will speak to from his home in Jersey City and the conversation will be moderated by independent film producer and author Jane Applegate.
The Film Society of Summit 'Virtual Cinema and Conversation Series' will feature new films that had public screenings canceled due to social distancing guidelines. The 'Virtual Cinema and Conversation Series' will offer participants the opportunity to view films in their own homes, attend Q&As with filmmakers, and connect with each other.
In 'What She Said: The Art of Pauline Kael', filmmaker Garver examines the divisive New Yorker film critic in a wide-ranging documentary about the critic who undisputedly transformed film into an art form. As a result of Kael’s writing, the pleasant weekend pastime quality of movie-going suddenly became a must-see, do-or-die, high-stakes experience.
In a field that has historically embraced few women film critics, Kael was charismatic, controversial, witty, and discerning. Her decades-long berth at The New Yorker energized her fans ('Paulettes') and infuriated her detractors on a weekly basis.
Sarah Jessica Parker narrates the film, which features Quentin Tarantino, Paul Schrader, Francis Ford Coppola, and critics including Molly Haskell, Camille Paglia and David Edelstein.
