This blended learning class will combine online learning with on-site skills sessions where participants will practice skills and demonstrate competency. Initial online lessons of the training must be completed at least two days prior to the first on-site skills session.

The full Lifeguarding class provides participants with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies, as well as provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. The course content and activities prepare participants to respond quickly and effectively in order to prevent drowning and injuries.

Participants must be age 15 by the completion of the course. They must be able to swim 300 yards continuously -- using front crawl and breaststroke only -- with their face in the water. Participants also must be able to surface dive 7 - 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, and tread water for two minutes using legs only.

To complete the course, participants must attend all class sessions, demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, successfully complete three final skill scenarios, and score an 80 percent or higher on the final written exams. Those who successfully complete the course will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguard Training/First Aid, which is valid for 2 years, and an American Red Cross certificate for CPR / AED, valid for 1 year).
