SUMMIT, NJ - The Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child’s fifth- and sixth-grade boys basketball teams won their respective CYO division championships Saturday, marking the second championship for the sixth-grade squad – who previously won as fourth graders.
The championship game triumph against Holy Trinity School capped off an undefeated 12-0 season for the sixth graders, who advanced to the semifinals last year.
For the fifth graders, their championship win was especially impressive given it was their inaugural season. They finished with a 9-3 regular season record and, despite being an underdog, beat the first seeded team, also from Holy Trinity School.
The girls’ fifth- and sixth-grade CYO team also played hard, resulting in a second-place finish, wrapping up a 10-2 season.
The fifth-grade boys were coached by Michael Barry and Russell Kivler, the girls were coached by David Castellano and Chris Castano, and the sixth-grade boys were coached by Sal Garcia and Craig Chobor.
