SUMMIT, NJ - Summit elementary school students recently competed in the "Battle of the Books" Fourth and Fifth Grade finales, the culmination of a reading motivation program sponsored by the The New Jersey Association of School Librarians.

Funded by the Summit Educational Foundation (SEF), the goals of the 'Battle of the Books' program are to encourage reading for pleasure, broaden reading interest, and recognize students who enjoy reading. Each participating school district that chooses to participate in the program has the flexibility to structure their initiative based upon the needs of their school. In Summit, the program is offered as an elective activity held once a week throughout the winter months during recess periods.

Four Fifth Grade teams -- 'Galaxy Readers', 'Lord of the Readers', 'Stunning Stars', and 'Twix' -- faced off in the Lincoln-Hubbard Commons for the Hilltop City title. Teams had the opportunity to answer 10 questions each, in a round-robin format, relying on retention and recall of information, attention to facts and details, and cooperation between teammates. The students had to rely on their close reading skills to as they sorted through characters, setting, and plot, not to mention authors and titles sprinkled over 15 book titles.
