SUMMIT, NJ - Two suspects are in custody in an apparent stolen car incident turned motor vehicle accident in the early morning hours of April 21 that left a Summit Police Department Officer hospitalized in serious condition.

Summit Police Department Officer Anthony Pyzik is listed in a serious but stable condition at Morristown Medical Center following the accident, which occurred at 12:16 a.m. at the intersections of Morris Avenue and Lower Overlook Road in Summit. The 31-year-old Pyzik -- a three-year member of the Summit Police Department -- was monitoring a motor vehicle pursuit of a stolen motor vehicle from a neighboring jurisdiction, traveling east on Morris Avenue when the suspect vehicle traveling west on Morris Avenue crossed the center line and collided head-on with his police vehicle causing extensive damage to both vehicles. 

According to Summit Police Captain Andrew Bartolotti, Officer Pyzik received lacerations to the head requiring 15 stitches, and will require surgery to repair femur, hip and wrist fractures.

Two suspects were apprehended at the scene. The driver of the vehicle Walleed Wheeler, a male age 18 of Newark, is charged with second degree eluding and second degree aggravated assault on a police officer, third degree receiving stolen property and third degree possession of heroin. The passenger, Dante Brown, a male age 20 also of Newark, is charged with third degree receiving stolen property. 

At the time of the incident it was unknown if additional suspects had fled the scene. Further investigation conducted by Summit Police and several other responding police agencies, including a New Jersey State Police helicopter, determined that no further suspects were at large.
