SUMMIT, NJ - Eric Baier drained the winning basket inside the game's final clock ticks -- the exclamation points in a 24-point, 11-rebound Double-Double dandy from the senior captain -- and the Summit High School Boys Varsity Basketball Team won their second consecutive game in dramatic fashion by defeating Rahway 57-55 at the Main Gym.
Baier's big night -- coming directly on the heels of a 27-point, 10-rebound performance in a one-point win over Delbarton January 11 -- was partnered by a 17-point, 12-rebound beauty of a Double-Double by classmate and fellow captain Will Hellings as the Maroon and White won their fourth game in a row and improved to 7-2 on the season.
Senior captain Joe Lusardi (6 points and 5 rebounds) and classmate Jalen Russell (9 and 3) had solid nights as well for Summit, which needed all of their seniors' heroics to combat a phenomenal 34-point effort from Rahway's Ernest Carter.
The furious finish saw Hellings drain two free throws to Summit up by three with 17 seconds left only to see Carter splash a three-ball with 10 seconds remaining to knot the score at 55. Lusardi took the ensuing inbound pass the length of floor and found Baier, whose shot with three seconds left hung on rim before falling.
After an even-up, 9-9 opening eight minutes, the Indians led 28-24 at the break, but The 'Top came out strong in the third quarter and grabbed a 40-37 lead heading to the final frame. It was a see-saw finish until Baier rose up to give the home team the decisive bucket.
Summit will now make the super-short trip to take on Governor Livingston January 14. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
