ROSELLE, NJ - Summit's Joe Lusardi and Austin Groce, key contributors on both sides of the ball, were named the Salerno Duane Summit High School Football Players of the Game for the Hilltoppers 45-14 season-opening victory at Roselle.
Senior captain Lusardi gained 177 yards on just 13 carries and found paydirt twice, including once on a 54-yard run off right tackle that included several highlight reel-caliber moves and a burst of speed to the corner flag.
Groce led the team with eight tackles from his linebacker spot and also found the end zone himself on 41-yard pass play in the second quarter. The junior also had a 95-yard pick six called back due to a penalty on the return.
The Salerno Duane Summit Football Players of the Game Award is a collaboration between Salerno Duane Jeep Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram of Summit and TAPinto Summit which, after each Summit High School Varsity Football game, will honor Hilltopper players -- as designated by the coaching staff -- for their performance(s).
Summit (1-0) next travels to North Plainfield on September 20. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
