SUMMIT, NJ - Sophomore Olivia Lawlor scored 19 points and added seven rebounds as the Summit High School Girls Varsity Basketball Team defeated Elizabeth 57-47 at the Main Gym. Over in North Caldwell, the Hilltopper Boys Varsity was too much for West Essex, winning 66-38 behind four players -- led by senior captain Will Hellings' 15 points -- who scored in double-digits.

The twin triumphs lift both teams' season marks to 2-0.

Taking a nine-point lead -- after a 22-point offensive outburst in the second quarter -- to the halftime break, the Girls Varsity was tested by the Minutemen in the second-half, but the Maroon and White got 12 points each from captains Sylvie Goudreau and Kiran McCormick and used a 19-point fourth quarter to finish strong.

The Hilltoppers will now face Hanover Park December 27 in the opening round of the Pete Tierney Holiday Tournament at Summit High School. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.

Hilltopper Boys Wallop West Essex

Building a 17-point halftime lead, the Boys Varsity just kept going to bury West Essex. Hellings (15 points and 7 rebounds), and seniors Jalen Russell (14 and 4), Eric Baier (13 and 7) and Charles Lord (11) combined for 53 of the team's 66-point output.

Summit next takes on Morristown December 27 in the opening round of the Pete Tierney Holiday Tournament at Summit High School. Game time is set for 6:45 p.m.
