SUMMIT, NJ - Well, let's get that taken care of right off the hop.
Beginning their 2018 Union County Tournament journey by vanquishing the foe that eliminated them from the tournament each of the past two years, the Summit High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team finally broke the Viking hoodoo by beating Union Catholic 3-2 in Extra Time on the Upper Turf Field.
Freshman Natasha Kim's cross found junior Keegan Mayer who finished the chance less than one minute into the added session for fifth-seeded Summit, now 5-8 on the season. The Hilltoppers, who advance to play fourth-seeded Westfield in the quarterfinals, were the superior side on both the scoreboard and on the run of play, generating 10 shots on target to their opponent's three.
Senior captain Kelsey Space opened the scoring for the Maroon and White and sophomore Skye Gilbert added the second tally. A strong defensive effort was led by senior captain Claire Murdock and classmate Anna Griffith, with juniors Renee Hayford and Arden Dooley manning the defensive flanks.
Summit's junior goalkeeper Sophie Zachara was credited with three saves on the day.
Prior to battling the Blue Devils on October 13 at 2 p.m., the Hilltoppers will entertain Parsippany Hills October 12 on the Upper Turf Field. The match is set to kick-off at 4 p.m.
