BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - In a low-scoring contest points -- thank you, 'Captain Obvious' -- come at a premium and those points that are gained are uber-valuable.
Facing Governor Livingston on the road, the Summit High School Boys Varsity Basketball Team found itself in such a struggle. Up by a lone point at the half, the Maroon and White found a way to punch the 'O' up a notch in the third quarter while actually ratcheting up their 'D' as well.
The result was a 13-2 third quarter that sent the Hilltoppers to a 43-38 victory over the Highlanders. Will Hellings had a game hight 15-points and snared 11 rebounds, the senior captain's Double-Double lead the way for Summit, which won its fifth in a row and is now 8-2 on the season.
Senior captain Eric Baier had nine points and classmate Charles Lord knocked down two three-balls and added seven. Sean McCullough (13 points and 5 rebounds) and Vincent Mellusi (9 and 4) paced Governor Livingston.
Tied after the first quarter at nine apiece, The 'Top was on top just 20-19 at the break. After their strong third quarter, the Hilltoppers managed the fourth frame well enough to reach the finish line first.
Summit now travels to Scotch Plains-Fanwood January 18. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
