SUMMIT, NJ - Riding a strong second-quarter to build a seven-goal halftime lead, the number-one seeded Summit High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team rolled past fourth-seeded West Essex 10-2 in the NJSIAA North, Group 2 semifinals at Tatlock Park. The victory sets up a May 25 Group Final in Summit that will pit the Hilltoppers against third-seeded Ramapo.
Senior captain Jackson Tyler and classmate Gray Humphrey each had Hat Tricks, and sophomore Michael Bonomo had a pair of goals and two assists to drive the offense for Summit, winners of eight games in a row and now 14-2 on the season.
Summit led 3-1 after the first quarter on goals from sophomore Luke Dinola, Humphrey and Tyler, then blew the doors wide open with five consecutive tallies in the next 12 minutes, with Tyler, Bonomo, Humphrey, Tyler again, and senior captain Greg Moller doing the damage.
White the offense was grooving, the Summit defense -- led by senior captains Dom Yorio and Deacon Donaldson, fellow senior Davis Strabley, along with junior Harry Grange and sophomore Austin Groce -- was in good nick, consistently denying getting stops and turnovers and, generally, making life sunny for senior Tyler Hadley in goal, who made five stops when called on.
Up 8-1, Summit dropped a gear in the third quarter and went the entire stanza and the first three-plus minutes of the fourth quarter without scoring. West Essex got just a lone goal during that period of play, which the Maroon and White canceled out and then some when Humphrey and Bonomo found the back of the net in the final frame.
"I thought we did a good job in the middle of the field, on ground balls," said Summit Head Coach Jim Davidson, citing the work of Strabley and others. "Tyler (Hadley) did a nice job on the clear today and our defensive unit is working well together."
Summit versus Ramapo will be played May 25 at Tatlock Park. Game time has yet to be set.
