SUMMIT, NJ - Peter Byrne's fifth three-ball of the game, with just seconds left in the contest, capped a furious and frantic Oratory Prep fourth-quarter comeback and gave the Rams a 51-50 victory over the Summit High School Boys Varsity Basketball Team at the Farrell Gymnasium. Byrne led all scorers on the night with 25 points.

Summit led 40-29 heading to the fourth quarter but was outscored 22-10 over the final eight minutes, a final frame in which they turned the ball over seven times. The loss drops the Hilltoppers to 3-2 on the season while Oratory improves to 4-1.

Senior captains Eric Baier and Will Hellings led Summit with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Baier sank three treys of his own on the night and grabbed 12 'boards for a Double Double. Hellings grabbed eight rebounds, as did classmate and fellow captain Jackson Rind, who also added nine points.

Tommy Conniff had 11 points for the Rams.

Next up for Summit is a January 7 trip to New Providence to take on the Pioneers. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Girls Handily Defeated at Chatham

Outscored 40-15 over the opening three quarters, the Summit High School Girls Varsity Basketball Team was defeated at Chatham, 53-30.

Summit's Olivia Lawlor had a 12-point, 11-rebound Double Double and senior captain Sylvie Goudreau had six points and eight 'boards to pace Summit. Maddie Hartnett (16), Carly Frohnapfel (13) and Tess Ford (13) combined for 42 Cougar points.

The Hilltoppers, 3-2 on the season, now return home to take on Union January 4 (12 p.m.) and Westfield January 7 (7 p.m.).
