SUMMIT, NJ - Competing on an unseasonably cold morning in the NJSIAA North 2, Group 3 State Sectionals at Greystone Park, the Summit High School Girls Varsity Cross Country Team had an outstanding day, finishing third out of 17 teams. The top five teams and the top 15 individuals in each section advance to the Group Championship November 16 at the famed Holmdel Park Course.
In racing to their podium placement, the Hilltoppers set a new school record at Greystone with their 1-5 average of 19:57.4 -- two full seconds faster than the 2015 team.
Senior captain Meghan Kelly led the Hilltoppers by finishing 13th overall and running an impressive time of 19:45.1. Caroline Moy followed right behind her, placing 14th and ran 19:46.8. Freshman Caroline McCann (15th), running in only her second varsity race, had an incredible day running 19:52.3 in only her third 5k of her early career. Sophomore Lara Cota finished 17th with a time of 20:00.4, and junior Katya Wardle placed 25th with a time of 20:22.5.
Senior Sofia Monserrat finished in 27th place with a time of 20:26.5, and freshman Jane Freeman finished in 34th place with a time of 20:40.7.
"These girls have been running tough all year long and today was no exception," said Summit Head Coach Dave Field. "We knew that both Middletown South and Mendham were the clear favorites, and we just needed to run our race and that would secure another birth to the Group Championships. We will have our work cut out for us next week to advance to the Meet of Champions, but I have no doubt that these girls will give everything they have into attempting to do so."
