SUMMIT, NJ - Holding a prep basketball team to 24 points over 32 minutes of play is uber impressive and an achievement that virtually always rewards the stingy side with the coveted 'W'. That form held true at the Main Gym as the fifth-seeded Summit High School Girls Varsity Basketball Team opened Union County Tournament (UCT) play with a 47-24 victory over 12th-seeded Scotch Plains-Fanwood.

The victory snapped a two-game Hilltopper mini-schneid and lifted their record to 12-9 on the season.

Senior Sylvie Goudreau (14 points and 8 rebounds) and juinior Sarah Maldonado (12 and 8) both nearly had Double-Doubles and comined for 26 points and 16 rebounds to pace Summit. Ashley Defrancesco led the Raiders with seven points.

The 'Top pitched a near shutout in the opening eight minutes and led 11-2. The advantage grew to 17 points when the teams went to the locker room with Hilltoppers leading via a football-like score, 26-9. Leading 41-16 after three, the journey to the finish became stroll-like for the girls from the 07901, which can now look forward to a 'Summit Derby' quarterfinal-round matchup versus fourth-seeded Oak Knoll.

The Hilltoppers UCT tilt with the Royals is set for February 21. Tip-off at Tisdall Hall is set for 7 p.m.
