SUMMIT, NJ - The Afternoon Music Concert Series at Summit's Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation will welcome noted tenor Rufus Müller and pianist Kayo Iwama on January 26, beginning at 4 p.m. The pair of noted musicians will perform songs by 19th and 20th century composers -- including Ravel, Poulenc, Schubert, Brahms and Copland -- in a concert entitled 'Red Thread, Blue Thread: A Tapestry of Song'.
The artists will meet the audience at a reception in the Beacon UU lobby following the performance.
Müller has won rave reviews worldwide for his dramatic interpretation of the Evangelist in Bach’s Passions and as the tenor in the Messiah. He gave the world premiere of Jonathan Miller's acclaimed production of the St. Matthew Passion, which was broadcast on BBC TV and was reprised three times at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
He has performed operatic roles including Tamino in The Magic Flute at Garsington Opera in England and Lucano in Monteverde’s L’Incoronazione de Poppea for the Houston Grand Opera. He is also in demand as a lieder singer, especially praised for his performances of Schubert’s Winterreise.
Iwama has concertized extensively with singers such as Stephanie Blythe, Kendra Colton and Dawn Upshaw throughout North America, Europe and Japan. She has performed in venues including Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Tanglewood, the Kennedy Center, Tokyo’s Yamaha Hall and the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.
She is the associate director of the Graduate Vocal Arts Program at the Bard College Conservatory of Music, while Müller is on the faculty at Bard College and at the Bard Conservatory.
