Mayor Nora Radest presents a proclamation to Lauren O'Brien, who co-founded METAvivors of NJ, the area chapter of the nonprofit that is dedicated to the specific fight of women and men living with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer (MBC).
METAvivors was created to provide ways to stay informed, inspire action, and advocate for better laws and more funding for stage IV breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for women. Metastatic breast cancer has no cure and an average life expectancy of 18 to 36 months. Less than 5% of U.S. breast cancer research dollars are allocated to the already metastasized patient.
Metavivors advocates for research funding to be increased to 30% of available dollars and for the creation of a breast cancer awareness license plate in the Garden State with 30% of fees going to MBC research.
