Friends, family and fans of Susan Hairston gathered at Summit Common Council chambers to witness and celebrate Hairston being sworn in to the Hilltop City's governing body.

Hairston was elected on November 5 to serve the constituents of Ward I, succeeding Stephanie Gould who herself had stepped forward to serve until the General Election after her husband, Matthew Gould, suddenly passed away August 13.

Surrounded by her family, Hairston was sworn in by Mayor Nora Radest and -- upon taking the oath -- became the first African American to serve on the Summit Common Council in the City's history.
