SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — A black bear was seen in the area of Mountain Avenue and Henry Street, not far from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, Thursday morning, according to the Scotch Plains Police. It appeared to be heading toward Route 22.

The school district alerted parents just before 7:30 a.m. of the sighting and informed them that school will begin at its regular time. 

The bear was seen running through yards and the neighborhood. Police units were setting up a perimeter to surround it. Animal Control notified and en route, according to sources.

"Several officers are in the area monitoring the situation. Please use caution," advised Scotch Plains Police Chief Ted Conley. "If you see a bear, call 908-322-7100 x150 to report it. If it is an emergency, dial 9-1-1."

Last spring, there were several bear sightings in Scotch Plains on the north side of town, including one caught on video.
