UNION, NJ – Jim Damato, long time secretary to the Board of Education, announced his retirement at tonight’s Board of Education meeting. Damato’s resignation is effective September 30.
Board of Education President, David Arminio, thanked Damato for his long service and excellent performance, wishing him well in his retirement.
Damato took a few moments to reflect on his tenure in Union and all that the community has meant to him. He noted how proud he was that his father’s family all graduated from Union schools and the Damato’s family long ties to Union. “In fact,” said Damato, “for the past 69 years, the Damato family reunion has been held at Weber Park in Union on Labor Day, and we look forward to the 70th next year.” He noted with pride the renovation to Jefferson School, which he called the ‘crown jewel’ of Union schools, and the purchase of Hannah Caldwell School, which was completed on a shoe-string budget. Damato thanked the many fine educators who give back to the Township of Union. Finally, he promised the Burnet Middle School 8th grade class that he would be back to be involved in the annual mock trial for his 21st time.
Replacing Damato as acting board secretary is Manny Vieira, who is currently the long-time business administrator for the school district.
