SUMMIT, NJ -The countdown is on to longer, warmer days and, before one knows it, summer camp season.

Registration is now open for the more than 40 full- and half-day summer camps at the Summit Area YMCA, designed for kids and youth ages 3-17. Summit YMCA camps offer the full spectrum summertime activities, including traditional day camp experiences such as "Camp Cannundus" to specialty camps like "Hands On! Minds On! Science Camp" that empowers children to take part in hands-on scientific inquiries and engineering challenges.

The 5-7 year-old camper can fulfill their dreams of becoming a princess or mermaid, while 5-10 year-old sport enthusiasts will relish every day spent outdoors at "Sports Camp," featuring ultimate Frisbee, football, basketball, soccer, swimming and more.

Older campers will fancy "Behind the Scenes," a two-week camp that lets youth learn about what it takes to put on a production, from painting scenery to helping with costumes.

The Y's Leader in "Training (LIT) Camp" enables teenagers to gain self-confidence, improve their leadership skills, and learn how to work with children of all ages while still having fun.

YMCA summer camp counselors and instructors model values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Every child is taught to value the importance of difference and diversity, caring and acceptance.

The Summit Area YMCA summer camp program gets high praise from both parents and campers alike.

"“My kids loved the positive energy and enthusiasm of the camp counselors who helped them settle physically and emotionally into their new environment. My daughter loved the color wars, and my son learned sportsmanship and the value of kindness in Sports camp. Summer camp at the Summit Area YMCA became their home away from home,” said Nancy, parent of a 2015 camper.

Gerard, a 14 year-old who is Y camp veteran, said, "I’m a shy person, but the Y has always been a comfortable place for me to be, and the Y helped me become more confident when meeting new people. I was able to attend the Teen Trek Camp these past few summers because the Y provided me and my mom financial assistance. During the year I enjoy playing soccer and other sports, but what I really look forward to is summer camp because I get to hang out with my old friends, make new ones, and do fun activities every day.”

Indeed, through its "Y Cares" program, he Y offers Financial Assistance to those with a demonstrated need, ensuring that everyone, regardless of age, income, or background, has the chance to learn, grow and thrive.

The Summit Area YMCA has published a 2016 Camp Guide, where interested parties can also enroll for the camp of their choice. Registration is also available in person at both the Summit YMCA or Berkeley Heights YMCA. An early bird pricing opportunity is available for all camps when signing-up prior to May 1.

The Summit Area YMCA is located at 67 Maple Street.
