UNION, NJ – About 250 seniors enjoyed an indoor picnic at the Union Senior Center on Tuesday celebrating Older Americans Month.
“You are the root of this community,” said Township of Union Mayor Suzette Cavadas. “It’s important to have activities like this to celebrate seniors.”
“We celebrate Older Americans Month in May to recognize the service of all elderly people to our community,” said Supervisor of Senior Citizen Activities Phyllis Monguso. “Each club here at the Senior Center has celebrated throughout the month, and this is our big event. We say thank you to our seniors for all they have done.”
“We really enjoy coming here and talking with our friends,” said Eileen and Charlie Green. “We’ve been married 65 years. We look forward to coming here. Everyone is welcomed.”
“This is Older Americans Month and we wanted to do something special,” said Township of Union Deputy Mayor Joseph Florio.
Florio said the term ‘Age Out Loud’ empowers seniors to speak up, speak loud, and be proud of their age and what they have done in the past. “The Township wants to do this for you,” said Florio to the seniors. “We think you’re important to the community and we want to be sure you feel welcomed and happy.”
Hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and all the fixings were available and an Italian ice cart with mango ice was provided for dessert. Music and dancing entertained throughout the afternoon.
