UNION, NJ – This year’s upcoming Township Reorganization Meeting, held each January 1, will serve up some principal changes in Committee member roles.

Having served on the Township Committee for the past 7 years, Suzette Cavadas has been selected to serve as mayor in 2017.  Cavadas will become Union’s first female mayor since Brenda Restivo in 2007 and only the third female mayor in Union’s 209-year history.

“As I enter this new venture of mayorship, I am very excited for what the future will bring,” said Cavadas.  “I envision a sense of community and people working together to make our great township an even better place to live and raise children, to grow and pursue dreams.”

“The true privilege of being a mayor is that I will have the opportunity to be everyone's neighbor,” continued Cavadas.

Committeeman Joseph Florio will become Deputy Mayor.

“I’m honored to be selected by my colleagues to serve as the Deputy Mayor in the coming year,” said Florio.  “This is a great community, and I know incoming Mayor Cavadas has a lot of exciting ideas for 2017.  I look forward to working with her.”

Committee members will serve as Commissioners of Township departments as follows:

Clifton People, Jr. – Department of Public Works

Joseph Florio – Seniors Department and Recreation Department

Michele Delisfort - Fire Department

The Township Reorganization Meeting will be held on January 1 at noon at Union’s Town Hall.  All residents are invited to attend.
