UNION, NJ – Ushered to the dais by some members of Union’s Municipal Band playing “When the Saints Go Marching In,” Dr. John Bunnell was recognized at the Township’s Reorganization meeting on Jan. 1 for his 26 years of service.
After serving in the Merchant Marines, the U.S. Army where he played in the U.S. Army band, Dr. Bunnell graduated from New York University with a high degree in music education and earned a Master’s Degree at Rutger’s Univesity.
Dr. Bunnell led the music program in the Madison schools for 31 years. During his tenure, Dr. Bunnell taught lessons, directed concert bands, jazz bands, and marching bands, orchestra, and chorus, as well as spring and summer musicals.
This past May, the Madison High School Auditorium was renamed the John H. Bunnell Auditorium in his honor.
Upon his 1990 retirement, Dr. Bunnell began conducting Union’s Municipal Band. “After 26 years of leading a passionate group of musicians,” said Mayor Cavadas, “Dr. Bunnell has passed on his baton after his final holiday concert this past December.”
“Twenty-six years ago, the band director became ill,” said Dr. Bunnell. “A band member asked me if I would take over for a couple of weeks. I’ve had 26 wonderful years and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it.”
“This band is a hidden gem in Union,” added Bunnell. “It’s a great band.”
