Coney Island is one of those rare places that unites history with modernity, as well as quiet, residential life with the craziness of an amusement park overlooking a beach. Because of the contrasts, the area is as loved by tourists and New Yorkers alike. Whether you are coming alone, with friends, a date, or with family, there is something for everyone throughout Coney Island..

Luna Park

Luna Park, although it is often mistakenly called by the neighborhood’s name, Coney Island, opened this past weekend. The amusement park is famous for the Cyclone roller coaster, a historical, New York City landmark that was built in 1927. Smaller children will appreciate the B&B carousel, and bigger kids and adults will have their adrenaline rush fueled on the park’s newest roller coaster, the Thunderbolt. Tickets for rides are expensive individually. Before planning your day trip to Coney Island, see if you can purchase a Groupon for a ride pass if you or your kids intend on riding the rides.

Impress your date by winning a stuffed animal at one of the games inside the park. People of all ages, who are not easily scared, will get a few screams in at the haunted house. In fact, just hearing sudden, unexpected noises from that corner may make some people want to keep some distance.

Boardwalk and beach

For couples, nothing can be more romantic than holding hands while walking towards the sunset. The boardwalk is huge, and it goes from Coney Island Beach to the neighboring Manhattan Beach, so there is plenty of room to get a run in or an afternoon of biking. Although the beach can get crowded on the hot days of summer, you will still find a place to sprawl out and sunbathe. The water tends to be cold on this side of the country, so even on the hot days, the water temperature can take time to get used to. Don’t let it stop you from wading though.

For a panoramic view of Coney Island and Luna Park, take a walk on Steeplechase Pier. It was completely destroyed during Super storm Sandy, but it has since been rebuilt. People can enjoy the view, especially during the sunset, as well as fishing.

While Coney Island is accessible by public transportation, it will be more feasible for those across the Hudson to drive. There is ample free and metered street parking in the area. There are also paid parking available.

If you get hungry, here are our suggestions to settle your hunger.

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...

Proud to support Tom Malinowski for Congress

March 9, 2018

Every single day, whether I want to be or not, I am reminded how important it is that Democrats gain control of the House of Representatives in November and check Donald Trump. Fortunately, there is a terrific candidate in New Jersey's 7th Congressional District who can beat incumbent Leonard Lance. That candidate is Tom Malinowski.

I'm a lifelong New Jersey resident -- including ...
