UNION, NJ - Senior quarterback Justin Beckett and senior running back Jerron Whitfield each scored two touchdowns Friday night, leading the Union Farmers varsity football team to a 27-10 defeat over the Franklin Warriors.
After losing their first game of the season to the undefeated Westfield Blue Devils last week, the Farmers have improved to (4-1), while the Warriors fell to (0-5).
Beckett passed for 82 yards and rushed for 89. Whitfield added 95 rushing yards.
“I didn’t think we played that great, but you know we executed, we were well prepared, and the kids played relatively good,” Head Coach Lou Grasso told TAPinto Union.
Whitfield scored a three-yard touchdown with a pass from Beckett 45 seconds into the first quarter.
Warriors quarterback Antonio Scott ran for one yard with 5:45 left in the first quarter to score the only touchdown for the visiting team.
With 4:37 remaining in the first half, Beckett passed the ball to Whitfield, who ran 57 yards en route to his second touchdown.
As his team led 14-7 with seconds remaining in the half, Beckett attempted to carry the ball from the six-yard line, but was tackled after time ran out.
After reaching fourth down, Warriors senior kicker Helal Helal kicked a 31-yard field goal and added the final few points for his team with 4:37 left in the third quarter.
“Our defense is really good,” Grasso said. “The kids just did what they were taught to do and played really hard.”
Beckett scored his two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, running 12 yards into the end zone for the first and 13 yards for the second.
Farmers senior kicker Mike Matullo added three extra points, while Helal recorded one for the Warriors.
Despite the win, Grasso will make sure his team improves for the rest of the season’s games.
“We try to work on new stuff every week and, you know, try to implement new things that we’ve learned,” Grasso said.
