UNION, NJ – Sonny Averona Jr. & Johnny Bones brought a splash of classic stage comedy to the Michael A. Kelly VFW Hall on Saturday night in support of the 2017 Veteran’s Alliance Memorial Day Parade.
The comedy duo brought to life a traditional comic show with jokes and music from the 50’s and 60’s. Averona Jr. and Bones carried on the tradition of a comical pair that first gained popularity with the working of Bing and Bob as well as Martin and Lewis. Their show contained a variety of entertainment routines that mixed with some original material while borrowing some routines from the 1946 Martin and Lewis show with new twists.
Discussing this year’s parade grand marshal, Robert Johnsen, Quartermaster of Post 2433 Michael A. Kelly Post, said Mike Yesenko, a World War II veteran, devoted his life to Union. Yesenko was involved with the Township of Union Historical Society for 40 years and was a member of the VFW for over 40 years. “He’s a great all-round man and it’s an honor for us to have him as our Grand Marshal,” said Johnsen.
“The parade this year will be bigger and better,” said Johnsen. “We’ll have two pairs of Clydesdale horses, the Mummers Band will be coming, and there will be numerous ROTCs from the surrounding areas and many high school bands. There will be a lot of festivities. It’s all about making the Memorial service after the parade a little bit bigger so people remember what Memorial Day is about.”
“This is our first annual comedy show at the VFW,” said parade Fundraising Chairwoman Phyllis Monguso, “and the hall was graciously donated to us by the VFW. I think we’ll all be having fun tonight.”
