UNION, NJ – Union Mayor Michele Delisfort and Township Committeeman Manuel Figueiredo spoke at to Girl Scout Troop 40863 as they work on earning their Government Badge.
Led by Troop leaders Sandra Nogueira and Gabrielle Iakobakis, Scouts Prianna, Harlow, Hailey, Rafaela, Daniela and Amber were prepared with questions for the two elected officials, including “how old are you?”, (Figueiredo: “old”) and “what are your hobbies?” (Delisfort: “I like to travel, read, and work out”).
Explaining responsibilities of the Township Committee, Figueiredo said committee members are voted in by the residents and serve for three year terms. “We may not always agree on everything,” he said of the committee, “but we talk it out and come to a solution.”
Delisfort told the group the Township Committee is responsible for passing ordinances – laws – based on what’s needed in the township. She explained to the scouts that there are many departments in town that help residents get the services they need.
Asked if she was ever a girl scout, Delisfort said she was a Brownie and then a Girl Scout until ninth grade. “I had great friends, went to camp. I had a great time.”
Hailey asked the mayor about her job. “I have two jobs,” said Delisfort. “I’m a professional city planner with my own company. I have nine other planners who work with me. And my other job is being mayor, which I love because I get to meet a lot of people and hear about their concerns and help them.”
Hailey asked the mayor and committeeman what sports they like. “I love tennis,” said Delisfort. “As a kid, I played tennis every Friday night in the summer at Biertuempfel Park.” Figueiredo said his enjoyed baseball and soccer.
Prianna asked Figueiredo if he has a limousine. “I do have a driver,” he answered. “It’s me.”
About their favorite parts of their job, Delisfort said, “I like trying to make things better.” Figuriedo answered, “We’re here to service the public, to help. That’s my favorite part.”
