UNION, NJ - The Spotswood High School baseball team defeated Union High School, 3-2 on Thursday. The Chargers had a two-run lead, scoring one in the first and another in the third. However, the Farmers tied the game up in the fourth. Spotswood nailed down the win in the ninth, giving them two straight wins to open the 2018 season.

Matt Vento pitched seven innings for Spotswood, giving up two runs on three hits. The junior struck out 10 batters and also delivered at the plate. Vento was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Matt Amador came on in relief of Vento, pitching two innings. Amador gave up one hit and struck out two.

Zach Fernandez pitched seven innings for Union, giving up eight hits and two runs. Fernandez struck out 14 batters. He was also 2-for-4 at the plate, hitting a double. Andrew Sanborn closed out the game for the Farmers, pitching two innings. Sanborn gave up one hit and one run.

Evan Scarduffa and Mike Izzo also went 2-for-4 for Spotswood as did Vinnie Guardiola. Guardiola scored a run in the victory. Derek Buhl was 1-for-4, scoring a run. Jalen Bryant, Anthony Farinha and Dren Gocaj all had singles for Union.
