UNION, NJ – A 60-year-old woman from North Plainfield was killed in the four car accident Wednesday afternoon on Liberty Avenue between Spruce Street and Morris Avenue.

According to police, the preliminary investigation indicates the Honda Accord being operated by the North Plainfield woman began crossing onto oncoming traffic, sideswiping one vehicle, crashing head on with another vehicle, which was pushed back into the fourth vehicle.  The accident occurred at approximately 4:35 p.m.

The woman was transported to Overlook Medical Center in Summit, where she was later pronounced dead.  The other drivers in the accident were not injured, police say.  The roadway was shut down for three hours during the investigation, which caused extensive delays on Morris Avenue in both directions.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Union Police Traffic Bureau.  Witnesses to the accident are asked to contact Officer M. Penetra, lead investigator at 908-851-5072.
