UNION, NJ – The fire that began Sunday night at the Schaefer Gardens senior apartments was extinguished by Union firefighters within 20 minutes.

According to Deputy Chief Mike Scanio, the fire began at approximately 9:30 in Apartment 345. The battalion immediately requested a second alarm from the county due to the high life hazard of a senior complex.  The fire was contained to the one apartment with minor smoke and water damage to surrounding units.

A coordinated evacuation between Union firefighters and police took place.  One resident with minor injuries was transported to the hospital.  All residents were returned to their apartments by 11:30 p.m.
