UNION, NJ – The person struck attempting to cross Route 22 Friday morning is seriously injured, as reported by Union Police. Originally reported as a fatal accident, the information available has been updated, listing the man in serious condition.
The pedestrian was hit by a motor vehicle as he attempted to cross Route 22 Friday morning and has been identified as Edgard Cruz of Union.
According to Union Police, the accident occurred at 9:30 Friday morning near the Point Condos and Chick-fil-A.
Cruz, 67, was attempting to cross three lanes of Route 22 East from the Point Condos to the 7-11 on the center island. He was struck by a black 2015 Chrysler 200 driving in the left-hand lane.
Cruz was transported to University Hospital in Newark. The driver of the Chrysler, who was not injured, remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Police are still seeking any witnesses to the accident, being investigated by Officer Michael Cocca of the Union Police Department Fatal Accident Unit. Any persons that may have witnessed the crash or its immediate aftermath are asked to call the Union Police Department at (908) 851-5000.
