UNION, NJ – Two men, suspected of shoplifting at Dick’s Sporting Goods, were apprehended yesterday after a chase that ended with a crash in Hillside.
An employee at Dick’s Sporting Goods at 2700 Route 22, contacted police at about 1:00 p.m. to report that a man ran out of the store with a large bag of clothing and entered a white Dodge van, according to Police. The employee provided police with a possible license plate number.
Police report that the suspects fled eastbound on Route 22. A white van passed officers near Vauxhall Road. When the driver of the van noticed the marked police car, he began driving erratically. The driver continued on Route 22 into Hillside and was seen weaving in and out of traffic. The driver of the van continued driving on the shoulder, passing other vehicles, until he struck a parked tractor trailer near Bloy Street.
The van was disabled and officers rendered first aid to the two injured men. Union EMS transported both men to University Hospital in Newark. The stolen items were found to be in the vehicle.
The two men in the car were both from Newark and identified as Steven Kearney, 54, of Lehigh Avenue, and Abdull Kearney, 42 of Dewey Street.
Both men are being charged with shoplifting over $800 worth of items from Dick’s Sporting Goods. The driver, Steven Kearney, also received summons for his motor vehicle violations. The men were later served with criminal complaints and left at the hospital.
According to police, the men and van fit the description of two other recent crimes at Dick’s Sporting Goods. On October 26 and 27, the suspects also shoplifted a large amount of clothing and ran out of the store. These crimes are being investigated by Detective Sergio Pereira.
