LINDEN, NJ - A tractor-trailer traveling North on S. Stiles Street attempted to make a left turn southbound on Route 1 when it turned onto its side this morning.
The tanker ruptured during the crash, spilling 85,000 gallons of gasoline onto the roadway.
Route 1 is closed in both directions between Pleasant Street & S. Wood Avenue, causing a massive traffic jam and a massive cleanup.
The driver was treated on scene for minor injuries by Linden Fire Department personnel and released.
Union County Hazmat personnel are responding to coordinate the cleanup efforts.
The Linden Police Department is suggesting motorists avoid South Stiles Street from the area of 21st Street to Main Street for the next few hours.
