Register Now for Mayor’s Day 5K at Union High School
With a great weather forecast and more than 50 sponsors, the Fifth Annual Mayor’s Day 5K Run scheduled for Sunday, September 20, 2015, promises to be an enjoyable one for all ages.
Held rain or shine, the event will begin at Union High School on Cooke Drive. Registration begins at 7:46 a.m. with the actual race commencing at 9:00 a.m. Participants will traverse a newly-designed, USATF – certified course beginning and ending at the high school. Club Metro USA is Event Sponsor this year, with the Gateway Family YMCA as Kids Run Sponsor.
Eugene Mitchell of Spencer Savings Bank and Hayley O’Connor of Electro America, Inc., both of Union, have been named co-chairs of this year’s 5K.
This year marks the fifth anniversary of this popular community event, and we are working to make it our biggest and better ever,” said Chamber Executive James Masterson. “We are grateful to the Township of Union Board of Education for generously hosting this event, and we are holding it on a Sunday this year, based upon feedback from last year.”
Prizes will be awarded for various categories, and t-shirts and gift bags will be distributed to participants.
Masterson added that a portion of the proceeds will go to benefit a local resident, 10--year-old Benjamin Duvelson of Union, who was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia, and has endured multiple hospitalizations and treatments.
“We are so pleased that Union Mayor Manuel Figueiredo shared Ben’s story with us, and we are thrilled to be able to help him in some way through this event,” Masterson said. “We encourage our community to come out in support of this boy and his family, while enjoying a fun day with their own families as well.”

The day will also feature a Kid’s Run for grades K through 5 at the high school’s Cooke Memorial Football Field. This event will begin at 10:00 a.m., with registration from 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. The cost to participate is $5.00, payable at the gate. There will be no preregistration – all participants must register that morning. The Kid’s Run is sponsored and coordinated by the Gateway Family YMCA.
