CLARK, NJ - Cardboard became way more than just a box or something to be recycled at St. John the Apostle School recently.   Students in grades PreK through 8 had a chance to participate in the first annual Cardboard Challenge. During the event, students were challenged to create arcade style games from cardboard and other recyclable materials.

According to the Cardboard Challenge website, the event started in the fall of 2012 following the short film ‘Caine’s Arcade.’   Since then children all over the United States have been inspired to take part in the challenge as a means of participating in Imagination’s Day of Play.

Students at Saint John the Apostle school were invited to the school’s Maker Space room at the end of the day.  “Students used materials from the Maker Space area as well as family donations to construct their games,” said Dr. Deborah Egan, Ed. Principal at Saint John the Apostle School.  “They utilized engineering skills to build non-electronic games for the entire student body to play and share.”

Each grade was assigned a time slot coordinated by staff members. Students who participate in the STEM Club managed the arcade and assisted players. Each team rotated in small groups through the game room.  At the end of their session, students were each able to pick out two small prizes that were stationed in the computer lab.   “Students really enjoyed the collaborative nature of the project.  Events like these really bring our school together as a community,” Egan added.

Saint John the Apostle School is a faith-centered academic community based on the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.  They are committed to serve all regardless of race, nationality or religion.  To prepare students to be responsible adults in an ever-changing world, their goal is to focus on academic excellence as well as instill spiritual, moral and social values.   Registration is ongoing.  Call the school office at 732-388-1360 for additional information or visit the school on-line at
