UNION, NJ – This year’s Summer Programs at the Union Public Library saw record numbers of participants and offerings, and children in the reading program reading over 261,000 minutes through the summer.

“The Youth Services Department at Union Library is amazing and have outdone themselves this year,” said Union Public Library Director Karen O’Malley.  “Hours and hours of planning go into creating a successful summer. The team planned and facilitated more than 100 quality programs for children of all ages and their families throughout the entire summer including the annual Summer Reading Program.”

The offerings were diverse in topic from a visit with live animals to how to make your own sushi to music programs, art programs, Teen Sew It workshop, ShopRite cuisine, Toddler Tae Kwon Do, and more. New this year, participants were able to conveniently register and track their reading through an online program called READsquared, on the library's website.

The Friends of the Union Public Library are an important partner to the library, added O'Malley, providing funding to help put on a successful summer program and for other activities throughout the year. “In addition to providing the popular Museum Passes, they funded the grand prizes at the end of the reading program and they also sponsored a friendly competition to award the elementary and middle school with the most participation.”
