SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The Union Catholic girls tennis team opened state tournament play with a convincing 5-0 victory over Paul VI in the NJSIAA Non-Public A South Tournament on Wednesday at Kramer Manor Park.

The Vikings, the No. 8 seed, didn't lose a set vs. No. 9 seed Paul VI as they improved its season record to 5-6. 

In singles play, Sadie Abood was a 6-1, 6-0 winner, Maddy Abood won 6-0, 6-1, and Annie Hartnett was a 6-0, 6-0 winner. At doubles, UC's Elisabeth Pickel and Madison Truesdale scored a 6-0, 6-0 victory, and Amelia Casale and Cara Leegan won by forfeit. 

With the victory, Union Catholic advanced to take on No. 1 seed Red Bank Catholic next week.
