UNION, NJ – Union Fire Department callmen Walter Buerkle, Nick Falzarano and Craig Zusi were honored at the Tuesday night Township Committee meeting for “diligently and proudly serving the Union Fire Department as members of the Callmen’s Unit.”
Committeewoman Michelle Delisfort said that on December 9, 1930, an ordinance was passed for the “establishment, regulation and maintenance of the Union Fire Department, providing for a fire company of paid men and callmen.”
The dissolution of the callmen company takes effect on July 1. Buerkle with 50 years of service and Robert Falzarano and Craig Zusi, each with 33 ½ years of service, are the last three remaining callmen, who combined have served the Union Fire Department for over 117 years.
The Township Committee commended Buerkle, Falzarano and Zusi for their distinguished service to the Union Fire Department. “We all wish them continued success and much good health and happiness in the years to come,” said Delisfort.
Union County Sheriff Joseph Cryan presented a resolution to Buerkle on behalf of Senator Lesniak, Assemblywomen Quijano and Assemblyman Holley. Cryan said, “in his 50 years, Walter has demonstrated his devotion to the people of Union, helping to preserve and protect both their lives and property. Walter has earned the respect and admiration of all who know him.”
