UNION, NJ – The 85th anniversary of the Michael A. Kelly Post #2433 was celebrated at Tuesday night’s Township Committee meeting.
“The post is dedicated to Union resident Private Michael A. Kelly, who died during the last weeks of World War I,” said Deputy Mayor Joseph Florio. “The post consists of men and women who have served overseas in our armed forces as well as the auxiliary who help and support veterans and families through aid and civic programs.”
Florio said the post supports a vast array of programs, including the Tom Mahoney Veteran’s Park, the Veteran’s Food Bank, Taste of Union charter sponsor, Union Little League, Operation Rebound, Veteran’s Day, the Memorial Day Parade and and Union High School ROTC.
The post is led by Commander Leo Graf and past Commander Bob Johnsen. The post’s original members included 126 veterans of the Spanish-American War and WWI.
Post Commander Bob Johnsen said, “I’d just like to remind everyone, our motto is ‘honor the dead by serving the living.' That’s what we as an organization try to do. Without the Township Committee’s support, we couldn’t do half of the things we do. We appreciate this recognition and we’re honored to be in Union.”
