UNION, NJ – Union’s Chamber of Commerce hosted a reception on Thursday for sponsors and supporters of the upcoming Mayor’s Day 5k event to be held on Sunday, Sept. 24.
“The Chamber does an excellent job of putting this event together every year, but we know it would not be half as successful without the support of all of you,” said Township of Union Mayor Suzette Cavadas.
Shake a Paw Center for Rescue and Adoption is this year’s event sponsor. “I’ve always had an eye out for giving back,” said Jeff Morton, owner. “I’m fortunate to be the lead sponsor in this event and I’m happy to help a local family in need.”
The course for the 5K run/walk is through town starting on Cooke Drive and concluding on the Union High School track through a newly upgraded inflatable finish line. Prizes are awarded to the top three overall finishers, as well as the top three male and female finishers in the following age groupings: 0-13,14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+
Race participants will receive an event t-shirt and gift bag. Shirts are guaranteed to the first 300 registrants.

This year, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Lacerda family.
In May 2016, Christina and Michael Lacerda, and their daughter experienced a life shattering event when 39-year old Michael suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm, followed by three strokes. The young dad survived, but was left incapacitated and unable to work, drive, or take care of himself. The tragedy has also left the family financially devastated.
Organized by The Gateway Family YMCA – Five Points Branch, the Kids Run is open to K-5th grade children and takes place on the Union High School track. Ticket prices include an event t-shirt. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. and the race begins directly following the start of the 5K.
“The Lacerda family’s story is one of love, strength and hope that I believe serves as an inspiration for us all," said Mayor Cavadas.
