UNION, NJ- The Union High School Farmers returned home to try and get back on the win column out of their bye week, but in a defensive battle, they came up short, losing to the Westfield High School Blue Devils by a final score of 7-6 Friday night in Union.
Both scores came in the second quarter.
Westfield struck first, when quarterback Hank Shapiro found Steven Barden for a seven-yard touchdown pass, to give the Blue Devils the 7-0 lead.
With one second left in the second half, Union got a score of their own. Sophomore quarterback Andrew Samborn found senior Andy Martin for a four-yard passing touchdown. However, the Farmers missed the extra point and trailed Westfield 7-6 in halftime.
Westfield and Union continued to battle throughout the entire second half on defense, but the Blue Devils held off the Farmers to secure the win.
The Union Farmers (2-2) head out on the road to play at Franklin HS on Friday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m.
