UNION, NJ – Township of Union Firefighter Captain Steve Spurr was recently honored with an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Excellence Award at the Overlook Hospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week Awards Dinner.
“Captain Spurr is well deserving of this award for his outstanding service and dedication to his work in EMS locally and state wide,” said Union Fire Chief Thomas Byrne. “Captain Spurr is a model EMT and there is no candidate more qualified and deserving than Steve to receive the Overlook Hospital EMS Excellence Award.”
Spurr was appointed to the Union Fire Department on February 1, 1990. He became Captain on October 7, 2008. Captain Spurr has received numerous awards throughout his 26-year tenure including the Heroism and Community Service Award from Firehouse Magazine, multiple Meritorious Awards, two Unit Awards and a Group Award.
“I am honored to accept this award and appreciate Chief Byrne for nominating me,” said Spurr. “There are so many deserving members in the Union Fire Department.”
Captain Spurr is a state certified paramedic and has been appointed as the EMS Chairman to the NJ State FMBA. As chairman, Spurr offers expert advice on all state and federal issues that affect local and fire-based EMS, coordinates continuing EMS education for FMBA members and works with the NJ State FMBA Legislative Committee on legislation regarding EMS.
