UNION, NJ – Township of Union firefighters now have additional tools in their arsenal of life-saving equipment -- pet oxygen masks.
The Canine Company recently donated the oxygen masks, including small, medium and large masks to deliver oxygen to a wide range of pets, from small mammals up through giant breed dogs.
Pet oxygen masks are used in the resuscitation of animals that are in respiratory distress because they have been exposed to smoke or need supplemental oxygen due to respiratory distress.
“We received three size oxygen masks for different sized animals,” said Battalion Chief Mike Scanio. “The small mask can be used for small dogs, cats or other small animals.”
The masks can be used if an animal is responsive and breathing on its own or if an animal is not breathing. Scanio said they have not needed to use the masks yet. “We hope not to have to use them, but are prepared in the event we need to.”
