UNION, NJ – A man was found stabbed to death when firefighters responded to a house fire on Van Ness Terrace Monday morning. A suspect is now in custody.
The two-alarm fire, originally called in by Irvington firefighters who happened to be in the area, was extinguished within 15 minutes, according to Union Fire Chief Mike Scanio.
When Union firefighters went to the back of the home, they discovered a body inside, according to Ron Manzella, Township of Union business administrator. The victim had multiple stab wounds. Firefighters attempted to resuscitate the man, but he was unresponsive.
The identities of the victim and suspect have not yet been released.
Subsequent to the ongoing investigation, a lockdown at Burnet Middle School took place when a car connected to the address of the house fire was found nearby. Once police had the suspect in custody, the school lockdown was lifted, according to Manzella.
Crime scene investigators are on site and the investigation continues. TAPinto Union will continue to update the story as new details are available.
