UNION, NJ – Union firefighters responded to Kean University on Tuesday for a basement fire.

Union Fire Chief Mike Scanio said while en route, firefighters were advised by Kean authorities of a power outage on the campus.  Firefighters found a small motor fire and it was quickly extinguished.

Due to the power outage, every building without back-up power had to be searched for anyone stuck inside the elevators, said Scanio.  Numerous occupants from numerous buildings were removed.  Firefighters remained on the scene for about 90 minutes with assistance from Union and Kean police to complete the search.

PSE&G were on scene making repairs to the blown transformer.
