UNION, NJ – The driver of a full-size tractor trailer semi-truck, while attempting to turn around through a mini-mall parking lot, was trapped inside after his truck caught the electric wires above, causing wires to fall onto the truck.
According to Union Fire Chief Michael Scanio, firefighters responded to the corner of Burnet and Laurel Avenues at 1:00 p.m. Thursday to discover primary and secondary electric wires and a large Verizon communication line on the truck. The area was secured by firefighters, including the evacuation of Abuja Restaurant.
Firefighters found the primary wire was not energized and the driver was removed without injury. PSE&G and Verizon arrived on the scene and removed any immediate hazard.
Laurel Avenue was closed in both directions for most of the incident. Burnet Avenue was reopened in both directions once the power line hazards were removed. According to Scanio, firefighters were on scene for about 2.5 hours. Verizon remained on the scene completing necessary repairs.
