UNION, NJ – Union High School senior Derryen Whyte has been selected December’s Male Athlete of the Month, sponsored by Service Professionals.

Whyte has an average 18 points per game, five rebounds, two assists,  three steals.  Whyte was the Husky Christmas Tournament MVP.

My favorite part of being a high school athlete is the tough competition I get to go against daily and the respect I receive from my peers. 

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

My favorite athlete is Kobe Bryant, I truly admire his work ethic, his intellect, and his willpower that he expresses towards the game of basketball.

What are the most important attributes of being a leader?

The most important parts of being a leader is being willing to listen to the others around you and their ideas, also to be able to take charge in difficult situations.

What is your greatest high school accomplishment so far?  

My greatest high school accomplishment so far is the MVP award I won at the Husky Holiday Tournament.

Do you play any other sports? What’s your favorite?

My favorite sport and my  only sport is basketball.

What’s your favorite subject? Why?

My favorite subject is Environmental Science.  I love learning about the environment we live in, and how the natural world around us works.

If you could spend the day with anyone in the world alive or dead, who would it be? 

Without a doubt it would be Martin Luther King, Jr.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I want to either be a sports physician, sports manager, or a professional basketball player.

What was the most difficult thing for you to overcome as a student-athlete?

Just my management of my time between school work and athletics.

What would your words of wisdom be to future UHS athletes?

To be focused and very responsible when it comes to school work. You can’t play sports and/or go to a good college without good grades.

Who inspires you?

My parents and my AAU coach are the people who inspire me and push me the most to be the best that I can be. The way they carry themselves is a prime example of how I want to be when I am older.

What are your plans after high school?

After high school I plan to go to a 4 year university were I will be studying for a degree in sports management….along with playing college basketball.
