UNION, NJ – A writer. A poet. A painter. A photographer.
These creative descriptors help illustrate a Union man’s passion and talents as he celebrated the publication of his fifth book, “Two Weeks One Summer”.
Giftus R. John, 64, came to the United States from Dominica in 1986. “Two Weeks One Summer” focuses on a young boy in the Caribbean during his summer vacation. “The story is based on my own life experiences,” said John. “As kids in the summer, we’d get into these box trucks and the driver would drop us off at our grandparents' and relatives' homes in different villages around the island.”
Other published books by John, 64, include “Ma William and Her Circle of Friends”, Mesye Kwik! Kwak!, “The Island Man Sings His Song”, and “Verses from Atop the Mountain”.
John, formerly in the printing industry, said he spends a lot of time writing, oil painting and taking photos.
“It meant so much to me to spread the message of this young boy," said John. "All of my books have something to do with my life events. I love to recreate the life I knew when I was younger."
